As the trend of cord-cutting continues for cable and satellite television, America’s National Broadcast Networks may be catching on. Following the cancellation of 20th Century Fox’s Last Man Standing on ABC in 2017 (see (See story: Studio Looking for New Network for Last Man Standing BY JASON MILLER) many entertainment critics thought that the national networks would shy away from creating any more multi-camera comedies. But following the premiere and revival of the popular 90’s program Roseanne on ABC changed all that. So much so that 20th Century Fox has decided to bring back Last Man Standing on the FOX Broadcasting Network later this fall. An official announcement was made today (Friday May 11th) by the network saying that, “LAST MAN STANDING ended too soon and the outcry from the fans has been deafening,” and that “We’ve wanted to put the show back together since its final taping a year ago, and Tim never gave up hope either, said Gary Newman and Dana Walden, the Chairmen and CEOs, of the Fox Television Group.
Tim Allen, the program’s star is already tweeting about the news saying “Thanks to all you guys for the support. We are back!”
Allen also responded via Fox’s aforementioned announcement saying ““Excited?,” and that “Team LMS was in the sixth inning, ahead by four runs, stands were packed and then for no reason, they call off the game. It leaves you sitting in the dugout, holding a bat and puzzled. Now we get the news from FOX that it’s time to get back out on that diamond – hell yes, I’m excited!,” and that it “just goes to show you – a lot can happen in a year.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter the so-called “Roseanne effect” has the Big Four broadcast networks rethinking their positions on “reinvesting in multi-camera comedies.” Last year alone 16 multi-camera comedies were ordered, the most in the last 7 years. The networks together in 2017 put in orders for 4 multi-camera comedies to series with 2018 numbers already matching last years number to date.
No word yet from Fox Executives on when Last Man Standing may be back on air other than that it will be in the 2018-2019 broadcast schedule.
